Electronics companies make extensive use of cardboard for the packaging of their products to protect them during storage and shipment, but this means that, only in teh USA, every year about 90 billion tons of cardboard become an unused waste (source Dezeen).

To improve this situation, Samsung has activated the Eco-packaging Concept, a project that aims to reduce this waste by providing customers with a way to repurpose their television packaging into new household items. Each Eco-Packaging cardboard box is printed with a special dot pattern which takes away the feeling of the packaging.

Dezeen x Samsung Out of the Box Competition is a contest to find new innovative objects for the home that can be made using the cardboard packaging of the televisions of the South Korean company. The design must allow everyone to build the object easily at home.

GLOBE is designed for “The Serif” Samsung TV and aims to a young target who loves entertainment and technology, loves to dance and sing and share their experiences. The objects were designed accounting for the short and long term, to accompany “The Serif” as it integrates with its supplied objects.

The immediate goal of GLOBE is to normalize the gestural action of bringing the remote control close to your mouth to communicate a command to the Smart TV, stimulating a new behavior by mimicking a well-known and identifiable action. In this sense, the spherical-shaped design of the microphone serves two functions: a purely iconic one, that emulates the microphone archteype, and a functional one, as a resonance box for the remote control microphone.

Through the remote control microphone, in future developments, it will be possible to integrate, with the implementation of an app, a karaoke functionality for an even more interactive and fun experience, giving the user the possibility to play with sound effects and voice modifiers. All the components of the microphone and the stand have been designed to interlock, keeping the recyclability of the product 100% sustainable.

HONDO is conceived for “The Frame” Samsung TV, and it fits into a classic family context, consisting of mom, dad, child (about 4-6 years), and a dog. The idea for HONDO took shape from the analysis of the television installation process, which consists of mainly five phases: 1. The arrival of the package; 2. Discard of the parcel; 3. Installation; 4. Setting; 5. Fruition.

Phases 2,3 and 4 are very delicate but also of great interest for the small ones of the family, who can be a hindrance to those in charge of the installation. In this scenario, HONDO becomes a tool of distraction and play for the little ones, while the adults are dedicated to the delicate installation and setting of the TV.

The rocking-horse design was thought to be robust and easy to assemble in just a few steps, allowing the child to quickly move on to the game phase. The design of HONDO is in line with the essential and iconic aesthetic of “The Frame” and the joints between all the components are designed to keep the disassembly of the product and its recyclability easy and 100% sustainable.
